Guanajuato is a mid-sized town in central Mexico and is an entire world unto itself, hidden in the hills. It’s full of the most colorful buildings, the friendliest people, and the most varied, delicious meals you’ll find anywhere. (And it’s great for budget travelers.) Nestled in the heart of Mexico, Guanajuato is a city that instantly pulls you in with its charm, history, and vibrant culture. Since 2023 we’ve been exploring different destinations, always looking for places that offer a mix of great weather, affordability, authenticity, rich history, and unforgettable experiences. After a tip from a fellow traveler who said they pass through Guanajuato but wish they could have stayed longer, we chose Guanajuato for our five weeks in Mexico—and we couldn’t be happier with our decision. One of the many reasons we chose Guanajuato as our travel destination is the delightful weather. The city enjoys a mild, temperate climate year-round, making it suitable for exploration no matter the season. Over the course of the year, the temperature typically varies from 39°F to 83°F and is rarely below 34°F or above 89°F.

January through March, when we visited, is particularly pleasant, with daytime temperatures averaging around 65-75°F (18-24°C) and cool evenings dipping into the 40s-50s°F (4-15°C). This comfortable climate makes it easy to stroll through the city’s charming streets or hike in the nearby hills without the sweltering heat experienced in many other regions of Mexico or like we experienced in Costa Rica and Panama.

During our stay, we appreciated the crisp mornings and sunny afternoons, perfect for sightseeing and outdoor dining. The weather has been so nice that most places have outdoor seating, often in little hidden plazas made of cobblestones. The clear skies illuminated the city’s colorful architecture, making our photographs even more stunning. Whether lounging in a plaza or exploring historical sites, the weather was just right for enjoying all that Guanajuato has to offer.

Guanajuato is incredibly affordable, making it a perfect destination for budget-conscious travelers. Here are some reasons why:

• Accommodations: Renting an apartment is significantly cheaper than booking hotels or hostels nightly. Prices for a one-bedroom apartment range from $300 to $800 USD per month, depending on location and amenities. Hostels offer affordable options with prices starting from around $10 USD per night.
• Dining: Eating out is very affordable, with meals at local restaurants costing around $9 USD per person. Street food is even cheaper, with options like tacos and quesadillas available for under $3 USD.
• Transportation: Local transportation is inexpensive, with bus fares and short taxi rides costing only a few pesos
• Utilities: Utility bills are low due to the pleasant climate, reducing the need for heating or cooling. (Our apartment doesn’t have either!)
