Why We Chose Guanajuato: 5 Compelling Reasons to Visit
Guanajuato is a mid-sized town in central Mexico and is an entire world unto itself, hidden in the hills. It’s full of the most colorful buildings, the friendliest people, and the most varied, delicious meals you’ll find anywhere. (And it’s great for budget travelers.) Nestled in the heart of Mexico, Guanajuato is a city that instantly pulls you in with its charm, history, and vibrant culture. Since 2023 we’ve been exploring different destinations, always looking for places that offer a mix of great weather, affordability, authenticity, rich history, and unforgettable experiences. After a tip from a fellow traveler who said they pass through Guanajuato but wish they could have stayed longer, we chose Guanajuato for our five weeks in Mexico—and we couldn’t be happier with our decision. Here are five compelling reasons why Guanajuato should be on your travel radar.
1. A UNESCO World Heritage Site
Guanajuato’s historic center is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognized for its unique colonial architecture and rich mining history. As you wander through the city’s colorful alleyways, you’ll encounter beautifully preserved buildings that date back to the 16th century. From the iconic Teatro Juárez, a stunning theater that hosts cultural events, to the Basilica of Our Lady of Guanajuato, the intricate details and vibrant facades will leave you in awe. The city’s layout, with its labyrinthine streets and underground tunnels, is a living testament to its historical significance.
2. Pleasant Weather
One of the many reasons we chose Guanajuato as our travel destination is the delightful weather. The city enjoys a mild, temperate climate year-round, making it suitable for exploration no matter the season. Over the course of the year, the temperature typically varies from 39°F to 83°F and is rarely below 34°F or above 89°F.
January through March, when we visited, is particularly pleasant, with daytime temperatures averaging around 65-75°F (18-24°C) and cool evenings dipping into the 40s-50s°F (4-15°C). This comfortable climate makes it easy to stroll through the city’s charming streets or hike in the nearby hills without the sweltering heat experienced in many other regions of Mexico or like we experienced in Costa Rica and Panama.
During our stay, we appreciated the crisp mornings and sunny afternoons, perfect for sightseeing and outdoor dining. The weather has been so nice that most places have outdoor seating, often in little hidden plazas made of cobblestones. The clear skies illuminated the city’s colorful architecture, making our photographs even more stunning. Whether lounging in a plaza or exploring historical sites, the weather was just right for enjoying all that Guanajuato has to offer.
3. Affordability
Guanajuato is incredibly affordable, making it a perfect destination for budget-conscious travelers. Here are some reasons why:
- Accommodations: Renting an apartment is significantly cheaper than booking hotels or hostels nightly. Prices for a one-bedroom apartment range from $300 to $800 USD per month, depending on location and amenities. Hostels offer affordable options with prices starting from around $10 USD per night.
- Dining: Eating out is very affordable, with meals at local restaurants costing around $9 USD per person. Street food is even cheaper, with options like tacos and quesadillas available for under $3 USD.
- Transportation: Local transportation is inexpensive, with bus fares and short taxi rides costing only a few pesos
- Utilities: Utility bills are low due to the pleasant climate, reducing the need for heating or cooling. (Our apartment doesn’t have either!)
- Activities: Guanajuato offers many free or low-cost cultural activities, making it easy to enjoy the city without overspending.
4. Size
Guanajuato is a city that strikes a perfect balance in terms of size, offering the charm of a small town with the vibrancy of a larger city. Here are some key points about its size and the benefits it provides:
- Population: Guanajuato has a population of about 197,000 people within the city limits. This size allows for a close-knit community where residents often know each other, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere.
- Area: The city covers an area of approximately 4.73 sq miles, which is large enough to provide diverse landscapes and ecosystems but small enough to maintain a cozy feel.
Benefits of Size:
- Community Feel: The city’s size fosters a strong sense of community, making it easy to connect with locals and other travelers.
- Walkability: Guanajuato’s compact historic center is highly walkable, with narrow streets and alleys that encourage exploration on foot. (though the hills of adjacent neighborhood can take a toll on your legs!)
- Cultural Activities: Despite its size, Guanajuato hosts significant cultural events like the Festival Internacional Cervantino, which brings international artists and performers to the city.
- Economic Balance: The city’s size supports a balanced economy, with a mix of tourism, education (as a university town), and local industries, ensuring a stable and affordable lifestyle for residents.
Overall, Guanajuato’s size is/was a major part of its appeal, offering a unique blend of small-town charm and big-city amenities that we love.
5. Breathtaking Landscapes and Natural Beauty
Guanajuato isn’t just about history and culture; it also offers stunning natural landscapes. Surrounded by mountains, the city provides breathtaking views that will leave you spellbound. A stroll up to El Pipila, a hilltop monument, rewards visitors with panoramic vistas of the city’s colorful rooftops and sprawling hills. The nearby Sierra de Santa Rosa is perfect for hiking and experiencing the region’s diverse flora and fauna. Whether you’re a nature lover or a photography enthusiast, the scenic beauty of Guanajuato is sure to impress.
6. Vibrant Culture and Festivals
Guanajuato pulses with cultural energy, especially during its annual festivals. The International Cervantino Festival, held every October, is one of Latin America’s most significant arts and cultural festivals, attracting performers and artists from around the world. The city comes alive with music, theater, dance, and art, creating an atmosphere that celebrates creativity and diversity. Additionally, experiencing the local traditions, such as the Day of the Dead celebrations, showcases the region’s deep-rooted customs and its profound relationship with life and death.
7. Culinary Delights
No visit to Guanajuato is complete without indulging in its culinary offerings. The city’s food scene is a delightful blend of traditional Mexican flavors and innovative cuisine. From street vendors offering mouthwatering tacos & torta de milanesa to charming cafes serving regional dishes like enchiladas mineras and stuffed chilies, your taste buds are in for a treat. Be sure to try the local specialty, “aguas frescas,” refreshing beverages made from fruits and herbs. With numerous eateries lining the cobblestone streets, there’s no shortage of delectable dishes waiting to be savored.
