We’re wrapping up our month-ish long stay in Portugal, and while we certainly soaked up the sunshine and explored charming towns, there were certainly days that got a little chilly, so we asked the friendly locals: “Does it snow in Portugal?” After all, we chose Portugal as a spot on our multi-year search for retirement, after we sold all our stuff, because of it’s well-deserved reputation for mild weather. Having left the cold Oregon winters behind we wanted to dig a little deeper and unveil the truth about winter in this captivating country. Snowfall in Portugal is a rare and sporadic event, typically occurring between December and February. Even then, it tends to be short-lived and concentrated in higher elevations. The further north you go, the higher the chances of witnessing a blanket of white.
The Snowiest Crown Belongs To:
The undisputed king of snowfall in Portugal is the Serra da Estrela mountain range. Towering over central Portugal, this region boasts the highest peaks in mainland Portugal. Expect freezing temperatures and consistent snowfall during the peak winter months, making it a haven for winter sports enthusiasts.
Winter Wonderland or Mild Marvel?
For most of Portugal, winter is a gentle affair. Temperatures dip compared to the summer months, but rarely plummet below freezing. Think cozy evenings by the fireplace rather than battling blizzards. Seeking Sunshine Instead?
Portugal’s diverse landscape offers a solution for those who prefer to escape the snow. The Algarve region, where we spent the vast majority of our time in Portugal, boasts some of the warmest winter temperatures in Europe. Just yesterday (mid-March 2024) we were on Faro beach and the weather was glorious. Here, you can trade snow boots for sandals and explore charming towns, bask on pristine beaches, and soak up the winter sun.
