Our Costa Rica itinerary got a little shuffled around, leaving us with some unplanned downtime in downtown San Jose. No worries though, that’s just part of the nomadic life! We prefer to lace up our shoes and explore the city on foot, so here are some of the best things to do in San Jose Costa Rica for budget-minded travelers like us. Whether you’re a traveler or just looking for affordable ways to experience San Jose, these spots are definitely worth checking out!

#1 Marvel at Precious Treasures at the Jade Museum
The Jade Museum (Museo del Jade y de la Cultura Precolombina) was a great way to spend a budget-friendly morning. There’s so much to see – jade carvings (seriously, over 7,000 pieces!), pottery, goldwork – it gives you a real sense of how people lived here centuries ago. Plus, it’s not too big and you can explore at your own pace. Figure 2 hours to see all the stuff in the museum.
#2 Spend the afternoon at the National Museum of Costa Rica
We rank the National Museum as the #1 reason why you should visit San Jose, Costa Rica. The National Museum is housed in this incredible building that used to be the Bellavista Military Barracks. We’re suckers for historical architecture, and this place definitely delivered! You can still see some of the cool architectural details from that era. Plus, it’s right across the square from the Jade Museum, making it a perfect two-fer for a history and culture fix. We could have spent a whole day here.
#3 Visit the Natural Science Museum La Salle
If you’re looking for things to do in San Jose on a budget, the Natural Science Museum La Salle is a great option! This place is full of fascinating exhibits – dinosaur bones, exotic birds, tons of insects! It was cool to see how the museum started with student contributions and grew into this big space. Perfect for a budget-friendly afternoon of exploration. Another neat place to spend a couple of hours. #4 Explore the Museum of Costa Rican Art
We stumbled upon this awesome museum – the Museum of Costa Rican Art (Museo de Arte Costarricense) – while exploring the La Sabana Park. It’s not only packed with art from local and international artists, but the building itself is pretty cool! Built in the 1930s, it used to be the first international airport in San Jose. Talk about a unique museum experience! Give yourself an hour to tour this museum
#5 Wander Through Mercado Central
This community market is a feast for the senses, overflowing with colorful fruits, veggies, local crafts, and the most delicious food stalls. We wandering the aisles, snacking on fresh goodies and soaking up the lively atmosphere. Plus, it’s way cheaper than eating out at restaurants!
#6 Take an Walk Through Parque La Sabana
After all that exploring, we needed a chill afternoon. Parque La Sabana, the city’s giant park, was the perfect escape from the urban noise. We spent hours wandering the trails, soaking up the sunshine, and people-watching. It’s a free things to do in San Jose, and you can even rent paddleboats on the lake for a few bucks – perfect for a relaxing and budget-friendly afternoon.
#7 Tour the Beautiful Teatro Nacional
Even on a budget, you can get a taste of Costa Rica’s high culture! The Teatro Nacional is this stunning neoclassical theater, all fancy architecture and intricate details. While tickets to performances might be pricey, but a guided tour was just $14 for the two of us! It’s a cool way to experience a piece of Costa Rican history without breaking the bank. The tour last about 45 minutes.
#8 Walk down to the Parque Nacional
We needed a nature fix in the city, and Parque Nacional totally delivered! This chill park in the heart of San Jose is a great escape from the busy streets. We spent a relaxing afternoon strolling under the trees, spotting birds, and just enjoying the peaceful vibes. Perfect for a free dose of nature without leaving the city.
#9 Tour the Pre-Columbian Gold Museum
We always try to squeeze in some history and culture when we travel, and the Pre-Columbian Gold Museum was perfect for that. It’s literally right under Plaza de la Cultura, so super convenient. They have a cool collection of gold artifacts from ancient Costa Rican civilizations – jewelry, figurines, and more. The entrance fee was affordable (just under $33 for the two of us), and we learned a lot in a short amount of time. Figure about an hour and a half for this museum
#10 Experience the Coffee Culture
One thing we didn’t have a chance to do while in San Jose, but that’s definitely on the list for next time, is touring Doka Estate, a San Jose coffee farm! Costa Rica is famous for its coffee, and the city seems to be bursting with local cafes and even coffee tours. Learning about the bean-to-brew process and then savoring a cup of freshly roasted Costa Rican coffee sounds like the perfect way to fuel your adventures!
#11 Explore San Jose on foot with a local guide
We love exploring hidden corners of a city, and these San Jose guided tours sounded perfect for that! While we didn’t have a chance to join one ourselves, they seem like a cool way to experience a different side of the city. Imagine going beyond the tourist spots with a local guide, spotting exotic birds and plants in hidden green spaces, or even sampling local flavors while learning about Costa Rican culture. They even have tours with fancy dinners and nightlife excursions!
