7 Amazing Day Trips from Tirana

Tirana | Albania | Travel Guides

Tirana is one of Albania’s most convenient travel hubs – vibrant, welcoming, and centrally located for exploring the rest of the country. From here, it’s easy to set out on day trips to mountain lakes, coastal cities, and UNESCO-listed towns, each offering a different glimpse of Albanian life. These 7 easy day trips from Tirana make it simple to experience more of the country without the hassle of changing hotels.

7 Amazing Day Trips from Tirana, Albania

1. Lake Ohrid, Korca, Voskopoja, Pogradec, Lin

If you have a full day available, head southeast toward Lake Ohrid, one of Europe’s oldest and deepest lakes, shared by Albania and North Macedonia. The Albanian side alone offers enough variety for a rewarding day trip – from vibrant Korçë to tranquil Lin village.

  • Korçë: Known for its cathedral, historic bazaar, and craft-beer culture, Korçë feels distinctly different from coastal Albania. Stop for a coffee at Café Museum Komiteti or sample local Korçë beer.
  • Voskopoja: A short drive west of Korçë, this mountain village is filled with stone-roofed houses and 18th-century churches with beautiful frescoes.
  • Pogradec: Right on the lakeshore, Pogradec is the heart of Albania’s Ohrid region—perfect for a lakeside lunch, a stroll along the promenade and see the rose garden, or a swim in summer.
  • Lin: A postcard-worthy fishing village set on a tiny peninsula, Lin is famous for its mosaic-covered early-Christian church ruins and quiet charm.

How to get there:
Rent a car for maximum flexibility. The drive from Tirana to Korçë via Elbasan takes about 3 hours, with scenic mountain views along the way.

Trip tip: If time allows, stay overnight in Korçë, or Pogradec to enjoy the slower pace and lakeside sunsets.

2. Durrës

Less than an hour away, Durrës is the easiest coastal escape from Tirana. It’s a busy port city with long sandy beaches, Roman ruins, and lively cafes.

Visit the Durrës Amphitheater, explore the Archaeological Museum, or just stroll the seaside promenade and enjoy the coffee culture.

How to get there:
Frequent buses run from Tirana’s new reginal bus terminal (buses run roughly every half hour. The bus terminal is outside the city center, so take a city bus from Skanderbeg Square to “Instituti” or take a short taxi ride to get to the bus terminal), or take a day tour that includes wine tasting at nearby vineyards

Trip tip: Durrës gets crowded on weekends – visit midweek if you can.

3. Bovilla Lake & Krujë Castle

If you want a day trip that combines Albania’s natural beauty and historic heritage, this one hits both perfectly. Just north of Tirana, you can hike to Bovilla Lake’s panoramic viewpoint in the morning and explore Krujë Castle and its old bazaar in the afternoon – all within an easy day’s drive.

Start with Bovilla Lake, about 45 minutes from Tirana. The turquoise reservoir sits tucked between steep limestone cliffs and offers one of the most photogenic views near the capital. A short but steep trail (about 2.5 km round-trip) leads up to the Mount Gamti viewpoint, where you’ll be rewarded with incredible lake and canyon scenery.

From there, continue roughly an hour northwest to Krujë, one of Albania’s most historic towns. Perched on a hilltop, Krujë Castle once served as the stronghold of national hero Skanderbeg, and today it houses both the Skanderbeg Museum and the Ethnographic Museum. Below the castle, stroll the Old Bazaar, a cobblestone street lined with artisan workshops and small cafés – a great place to browse traditional crafts and souvenirs.

How to get there:
The easiest way to visit both is by car or guided tour.

Trip tip: There are no shops or facilities near the trailhead, so bring water and snacks – or pick up supplies in Tirana before you go.

4. Cape of Rodon

For something more secluded, drive about 1.5 hours west to the Cape of Rodon, a rugged peninsula extending into the Adriatic Sea. It’s peaceful, undeveloped, and home to Rodoni Castle, built by Albania’s national hero Skanderbeg in the 15th century.

Bring a picnic, swimwear, and plenty of water—it’s remote and there are very few facilities.

Trip tip: Stop at small beach villages like Lalëz Bay on the way back for fresh seafood.

How to get there:
Best reached by car or if you prefer you can book a guided tour

5. Pellumbas Cave (Shpella e Zezë)

For something active, head 40 minutes southeast to Pellumbas Village, where a short hike leads to the Black Cave of Pellumbas. The 2 km trail offers beautiful views of the Erzen River canyon, and inside the cave, you’ll see dramatic stalactites – and probably a few bats.

How to get there:
Easiest by car or private transfer. There are occasional local buses to Pellumbas village, but they’re infrequent.

Trip tip: Bring a flashlight or headlamp if you plan to go deep inside the cave.

6. Berat

Berat is one of Albania’s most beautiful towns and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its Ottoman-era houses climb the hillsides on both sides of the Osum River, creating postcard-perfect views.

Spend the day exploring Berat Castle, Gorica Bridge, and the cobbled lanes of the Old Town. Enjoy a late lunch with a river view before heading back to Tirana.

Trip tip: Wear good walking shoes – the cobblestone streets are steep and slippery after rain.

How to get there:
Buses run several times daily from the South Bus Terminal and take about 2 hours each way. Or, book a guided day tour.

7. Albanian Cooking Class Experience in Tirana

Not every great day trip from Tirana has to leave the city. For a true taste of Albania, spend a few hours in a hands-on cooking class led by local chefs and home cooks who love sharing their culinary traditions.

Depending on the experience you choose, you might:

  • Prepare classic Albanian dishes such as byrek, tavë kosi, or stuffed peppers,
  • Sip homemade wine or rakia while learning about regional ingredients,
  • Enjoy a full meze-style feast with freshly baked bread and farm-to-table produce,
  • Or even cook alongside a family on a small Albanian farm, learning recipes passed down for generations.

These classes are relaxed, social, and deeply immersive—perfect for anyone who enjoys connecting with local culture through food.

Getting Around

Tirana has three main bus terminals: the North/South Terminal, the East Terminal (or Southeastern Albania Regional Bus Terminal), and the Airport Bus Terminal. These terminals handle domestic and international routes, with the North/South and East terminals focusing on different regions of Albania, while the airport terminal provides connections to and from Tirana International Airport.

  • North/South Terminal: Serves as the primary departure point for major cities in the north and south of Albania, such as Durrës, Berat, Fier, Shkodër, and Saranda.
  • East Terminal: Also called the Southeastern Albania Regional Bus Terminal, this station is for buses heading to eastern cities like Pogradec, Korçë, and Elbasan.
  • Airport Bus Terminal: Provides shuttle services and local transport to and from Tirana International Airport (TIA) and Vlore, Fier and Shkodra.

Keep in mind that bus service in Albania is still an emerging industry – things don’t always go as planned. There is a new official government site but we learned the hard way that it’s not 100% accurate – Watch our video about our supposed “day trip” to Korce turned into an overnight trip because of the bus “system”

For independent travelers, day trips from Tirana are easy to organize and most tours include transportation, however if you decide to rent a car and go the self driving route, we recommend DiscoverCars – good for flexibility and reaching remote spots.
