Westport Winery Garden Resort: A Multi-Faceted Destination on Washington’s Coast
Finding Our Way There
On our drive through Washington state last summer, we discovered this hidden gem while traveling from Bellingham to Portland. Located about halfway between Aberdeen and Westport, the Westport Winery Garden Resort initially caught our attention because of the International Mermaid Museum – and there was no way we were going to skip THAT. As one of the standout wineries in Washington State, Westport Winery offers a unique blend of attractions that set it apart from other wineries in the region.
More Than Just a Winery
What makes this destination special is how it combines multiple attractions in one location. There’s a winery, rental accommodations, the Mermaid Museum, and expansive gardens filled with art. The best part? The gardens are open to the public with no admission fee. While they surely appreciate if you spend a few dollars at the winery or restaurant, it’s not required.
Exploring the Gardens of the Winery
Our adventure began at the sculpture plaza near the parking lot, where a giant chess set hinted at the treasures awaiting us. After visiting the Mermaid Museum, we set out to explore the grounds, which proved to be more extensive than we initially imagined. Despite spending over an hour wandering the various trails, we suspect there was still more to discover. Had we arrived earlier than 6 pm, we would have explored longer before heading to our next stop in Raymond, Washington.

Activities and Attractions
Throughout the gardens, visitors can enjoy various activities:
- A giant chess set
- Cornhole games
- A small golf course ((I think there is a charge for that))
- Multiple mazes
- A unique ‘soundgarden’
Art in Nature
The property showcases an impressive variety of sculptures:
- Materials range from stone and metal to wood
- Sizes vary from one-foot to eight-foot tall pieces
- Each garden area features its own theme
- Some sculptures are tucked away off the main trails
As you climb the gentle hill away from the winery, you’ll discover the topiary parade at the summit. One particularly intriguing feature is the Medicine Wheel, which comes with its own story – according to an informational sign, it was consecrated by a local shaman, and a curse awaits anyone who disturbs or removes items from within the wheel. Fair warning, we think, for those who might consider disrespecting the space.

Scale and Perspective
The true scale of the grounds becomes apparent from the lavender garden, where you can see the main building in the distance. The expansive layout offers plenty of space to wander and discover new surprises around every corner.
The grounds are quite large; we spent over an hour wandering the various trails and I’m not convinced we saw everything there. Had we arrived earlier in the day I’m sure we would have spent more time but it was getting on towards 6 pm and we still had no idea where we were stopping for the night (Raymond, WA, as it turns out. Stay tuned for our post about Raymond and the NW Carriage Museum)
Getting There To The Winery
If you’re headed from the Seattle area to the Washington coast, just cut off of I-5 at Olympia following the signs for Highway 101. Westport Winery Garden Resort is around a 2 hour drive from Seattle; about halfway between Aberdeen and Westport.
Whether you’re a garden enthusiast, art lover, or just looking for an interesting stop on your coastal Washington journey, the Westport Winery Garden Resort offers a delightful blend of nature, art, and entertainment that makes it worth the detour.
