Life as a Travel Blogger: Launching our Travel Blog

Technology is so awesome

This new adventure is exciting even though we haven’t pinned down a ‘real’ start date yet. No later than Nov 2024, though. But getting set up for success means setting things up technology wise, and, dude, that part SUUUUCKS, like, a lot.

Our plan is to create a cohesive resource across the blog and social media to help people who want to do a nomadic retirement make fewer missteps than we do and also figure out a way to monetize the thing to subsidize our travels.

I had a list of available domain names that I thought we could work with but then once we narrowed it down we also had to make sure the associated ‘handles’ would be available on all the other channels – Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, TikTok… Yeah, I stopped there because it’s all so overwhelming. Not horrible to deal with but nailing down the theme was emotionally stressful.

YouTube wouldn’t even give me access because our Google Workspace account was too new and hadn’t spent enough money yet. Weird that money can overpower time, yeah? You either need some history or you need to give us cash. NBD, I’m not ready to start posting video content just yet, LOL

Instagram and TikTok were super easy. Twitter felt super easy until a couple hours later when I was notified that my account was locked for breaking the rules. Fun. I haven’t actually done anything except create the profile so, not sure which rule I broke <?> And you can’t ask anyone; the chat function is useless because I can’t log in to my account so all I can do is send them an email asking WTF?

We thought Google Sites would be a great way to go because, well, it’s free with the paid Workspace account. Turns out it’s free because it isn’t great – who wants to send people to sites.google.com/mydomainname ?

Bluehost it is. Because it’s easy. I mean, if you know what you’re doing I’m sure it’s extremely easy to create a site in WordPress and be a star. I, however, am chronologically gifted and it’s been probably 5 years since I did anything even close to creating a website

All in all it’s been a fun day. Or, ya know, it feels that way after two fingers of Tullamore Dew
