ETIAS - European Travel Information And Authorization System

ETIAS is the acronym for the ‘European Travel Information and Authorization System’. It will be required for US citizens who wish to travel to Europe on short-term stays – up to 90 days. Stays of longer than 90 days will still require a Visa application.

The cost is around US$8 (7€ at whatever that day’s exchange rate is) and it is a pretty straightforward form. Based on everything I’ve been able to find it appears that if you have a currently valid passport and no criminal record the approval process should take a few minutes.

Once approved your ETIAS remains valid for 3 years.

It is not ‘new’. The program was started in 2016 and was initially slated to begin in 2022. Thus far it’s been pushed back 3 times. At present they are saying it will take effect ‘in 2024’. Maybe. The European Union is not notoriously efficient as far as new regulations are concerned

Since the program is not officially launched it is not possible to apply at this time (Aug 1, 2023) and once it IS launched there will be a ‘grace period’ of 180 days.

FWIW, the US has had a similar system in place, ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization), for Europeans to visit the US for almost 15 years. It costs them US$21 and is valid for 2 years.
